PerlePress Productions was formed in 2010 by Steven Pressman, who turned his attention to documentary filmmaking after many years as a newspaper and magazine journalist.
The company’s first film, 50 Children: The Rescue Mission of Mr. and Mrs. Kraus, premiered on HBO in April 2013 and was nominated for a News and Documentary Emmy in the category of Outstanding Historical Programming. Steve wrote, produced and directed the film, which tells the previously unknown story of Gil and Eleanor Kraus, a Philadelphia couple who traveled into Nazi Germany in the spring of 1939 in order to rescue 50 Jewish children from Vienna and bring them to safety in the United States.
Steve was born and raised in Los Angeles and received a degree in political science at the University of California at Berkeley. He worked for many years as a newspaper and magazine reporter and editor in Los Angeles, Washington DC, and San Francisco.
In addition to his filmmaking, Steve is the author of 50 Children: One Ordinary American Couple’s Extraordinary Rescue Mission into the Heart of Nazi Germany (HarperCollins).
